aka Nasal Surgery (or Nose Job)

Most people think that a Rhinoplasty is only done for cosmetic reasons, but that is not the case. Many people have medical reasons for undergoing this procedure; such as repairing a break in their nose or to remove a growth. Dr. Echavez, in the San Francisco area, is an expert in both reconstructive and cosmetic surgery and can help you reach your Rhinoplasty goals whether they are strictly cosmetic or medical.

What are the benefits of Rhinoplasty in San Francisco?

A Rhinoplasty has many different benefits and can help you achieve the results you are seeking. A Rhinoplasty in San Francisco can help you achieve a nose size that is in balance with the size of your face, get rid of humps and depressions, fix asymmetry, or fix a nasal tip that is drooping, upturned, hooked, or bulbous. If you are looking to improve your appearance or fix the symmetry of your facial features, this procedure could help you.

Am I a good candidate?

Most adults and those in their late teens are good candidates for this procedure. If your facial growth is complete, you are healthy, don’t smoke, and have realistic goals, you are a good candidate. Dr. Echavez will discuss all of these things with you when you come in for a consultation.

What happens during the procedure?

Before the procedure, you will be given an anesthetic to help you be more comfortable during the procedure. This is usually administered through an IV. Next, an incision will be made and will depend on whether your procedure is closed or open. During a closed procedure, all incisions are inside of the nose. During an open procedure an incision is made across the columella, which is the narrow strip of tissue separating the nostrils.

Once the incisions are made, the doctor will reshape your nose by removing bone or cartilage. In some cases, a cartilage graft is used to add to specific areas; for this cartilage may be taken from your septum, ear, or rib. In the event that your septum is deviated, it will be corrected to improve breathing.

The doctor will then close the incisions. For the first few days after the procedure, a splint and gauze will support your nose as it starts to heal.

As noted above your nose will be protected and supported by a splint and gauze to promote healing during the first few days.  You will experience some swelling, which will go away over the first few weeks. You will begin to notice slight changes in the appearance of your nose as the swelling subsides. It can take up to a year for the full effect of the procedure to be seen. During this time, swelling may be worse in the morning and gradually dissipate throughout the day.

What are the risks?

Almost all cosmetic surgery procedures come with some risk; this is why it is imperative to talk to the doctor about any concerns you have and your personal health risk during your consultation. Here are the risks associated with a Rhinoplasty:

  • Allergic or other reaction to anesthesia
  • Hematoma (bleeding)
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Skin discoloration/swelling
  • Septum perforation
